TEXAS FRONTIERS

Mineral Wells

Mineral Wells has been known for its mineral-rich waters since the 1880s. These days people still come to soak away their cares, but the town is equally well known for its beautiful natural scenery and historic charm.

THE WELLNESS FRONTIER

Where to start in the Wellness Capital of Texas? With water, of course, just as people have been doing for near 140 years, when the “funny tasting” stuff that bubbled up from the ground was found to be high in health-giving minerals. Stop by The Famous Mineral Water Company, the only water company still in business, to discover more about the unique history of Mineral Wells. Continue on the wellness trail with a visit to Lake Mineral Wells, a serene and scenic reservoir surrounded by lush greenery and limestone cliffs.

THE FOSSIL FRONTIER

Lake Mineral Wells State Park & Trailway offers hiking, biking, fishing, rock climbing, and boating, while Penitentiary Hollow is a unique sandstone rock formation popular with climbers. On the west side of town, Fossil Park invites you to hunt for fossils and take home whatever you find on the surface. Wherever you choose to roam around Mineral Wells, you’re never far from scenic views, and uncrowded, well-marked hiking paths.

THE HISTORY FRONTIER

Crazy Water put Mineral Wells on the map — and the fun is still flowing. At the heart of it all, The Crazy Water Hotel has a rich and fascinating history dating back to 1881. It first became a hotel in 1913 when wellness-vacationers flocked to the town for the water’s therapeutic properties and was renovated in 2021, honouring the original facilities – shops, rooftop ballroom, water bar – and adding a world-class spa. The Baker Hotel & Spa is being restored to its original 1920s glory and its re-opening represents an important chapter in Texas spa culture.

Downtown you’ll find more than 20 murals – grab a map from the visitor centre to plan your own tour. Clark Gardens Botanical Park is just outside of town and well worth the short drive, particularly in spring when the vibrant colours of this part of Texas are at their most colourful.
